Hydrant Flushing Near You

Hydrants are flushed annually to ensure they are in good working order and to maintain water quality.

Throughout the year, mineral sediment (iron and manganese) settles in the distribution system and can be stirred up when water flows reach a high velocity. Once disrupted, these sediments can cause aesthetically displeasing water discoloration that appears brownish red or yellow.

To mitigate the untimely release of these sediments, Rangeview or E86 staff will perform a controlled hydrant flush to keep your water clean and clear.

FAQ

Is the water safe for consumption?

Yes! Your water is still safe to drink. Iron and manganese are harmless and naturally occurring in most Colorado water sources.

What if I have discolored water coming from my tap?

We recommend flushing your cold water tap for 15 minutes. This can be done from any faucet in your home. DO NOT FLUSH WITH HOT WATER TAP. Hot water could lead to the resettling of sediment in your hot water tank, which could become a long-lasting issue.

Please attempt to flush your service line before submitting a water complaint. If the water doesn’t clear after 15-20 minutes of running your cold water, give us a call to let us know.

Is the water being wasted?

No. It may seem like you’re wasting a lot of water, but don’t worry. The water will be returned to the environment. Plus, it’s a minimal amount sacrificed to ensure good water quality.

Is the chlorinated water bad for the environment?

Yes. This is why we dechlorinate the water using Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) before it goes back into the environment. This removes the chlorine residual so the water is safe for aquatic organisms.

When will you be flushing my area?

Signage reading “Hydrant Flushing in this Area” will be placed at the entrance of neighborhoods and nearby streets approximately one week before flushing takes place.

Flushing Tips

  • *Avoid doing laundry during active flushing operations. The sediments could potentially stain white and light-colored clothing.
  • *Refrain from parking in front of hydrants, especially during hydrant flushing days.
  • *Trim vegetation around hydrants located in front of your address.
  • *Place trashcans and recycling bins on the sidewalk instead of the curb if your trash collection day falls on the same day as the scheduled flushing day for your area.
